LANXESS CISA donates machinery to the Ingogo Spinach Farming project, in Newcastle

Newcastle – Specialty chemicals company LANXESS became a beckon of hope to Mr Oupa Nhlapho’s Ingogo spinach farming project, in Newcastle, when it donated the travel irrigation machine and ploughing tractor during a handover ceremony held on 3 September 2015. The machinery will help Nhlapho, known as Sgegede, realise his dream to utilise all of the 20 hectare land.

The farm currently operates from a 20 hectare farm purchased in 2008. Only 6 hectare is being used to plant and grow spinach, which is distributed to local entities, including Spar supermarkets in Newcastle, Vrede and Volkrust, Cambridge supermarket, Newcastle Fruit & Vegetables, Newcastle Cash ‘n Carry and Feeding schemes in the Osizweni area.

The donation is part of LANXESS CISA (Pty) Ltd’s corporate social responsibility (CSR), whose sole objective is to help improve and sustain the quality of life of the people in the communities in which it operates.

Accepting the machinery, an elated Nhlapho said, “I thank the Almighty for making this day a reality. I also thank LANXESS for going beyond energising chemistry to energising farmers. I cannot not take this opportunity and thank my mentor and friend Mr Petrus Boshoff and my colleagues, who have been of great help to me in growing this farm into being what it is today. Not forgetting my lovely wife, Princess, and the rest of my family, who have been my pillar of strength”.

On behalf of the His Excellency, Mayor Councillor, Mr Afzul Rehman, Ms Nokuthula Thusi, the Head Of Department: Development Planning at the Newcastle Municipality said, “We have journeyed with Mr Nhlapho since 2013 when he was utilising only two hectares of this farm. We are excited to see the growth that has since taken place, which is very important for us because of our commitment to ensuring that we improve in terms of the local economic development in our municipality.”

“Across the road from here, on N11, we are building a fresh produce market funded by Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs(CoGTA). It is going to be the biggest project in this area, employing the local community members. For us this is one of the ways we are contributing to the economic transformation in the area. To LANXESS, please continue doing the good work you’re doing”, concluded Thusi.

After the formalities, which included the unveiling of the machinery, Nhlapho has handed the papers for the machinery as a symbol of ownership. His biggest milestone has been to settle the land repayments and is now awaiting the land to be transferred into his name.
