LANXESS invests in a special needs school in the community of Madadeni
LANXESS donates new classrooms to Bumbisizwe School for the physically challenged to help address enrolment challenge.
Specialty chemicals company LANXESS, today handed over a specially designed park home to be used as classroom to Bumbisizwe School for the physically challenged, deaf and learners with Autism. The park home is one of the four park homes handed over to the school over the last three years by the company.
LANXESS, situated in Karbochem, Newscastle, strongly believes that education is key to South Africa’s economic development, hence the company’s commitment to education is considered a keystone of its sustainable corporate policy.
It was for this reason that LANXESS saw the need make an investment of R1.4 million towards the procurement and installation of these park homes. This initiative forms part of LANXESS’ global Corporate Responsibility (CR) strategy which focuses on education as one of its strategic pillars, whose sole objective is to help improve and sustain the quality of life of the people in the communities in which it operates.
Addressing the guests during the handover, Managing Director for LANXESS CISA (Pty) Ltd, Mr Gerhardus Strydom, highlighted that LANXESS’ CR is the company’s way to ensure balance between the country’s economic, environmental and social aspects of its operations, while addressing the various stakeholders’ expectations.
“At LANXESS we understand the importance of impacting the quality of lives of people in the communities we operate in. The company cares about investments of this nature, which support education and benefit the school to ensure its sustainability”, said Strydom.
Bumbisizwe is a school for learners with physical disabilities, including cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, etc. Although these learners’ physical abilities are affected, they are following a similar school curriculum as the mainstream schools.
On behalf of the Department of Education, Ms Buhle Nkosi, Deputy Chief Education Specialist, Specialised Education said, “Thank you LANXESS for giving this school and the community of Madadeni the freedom to education. The kind of support you’ve shown to Bumbisizwe is too great to mention. As the Department of Education, we were deeply touched when your support extended to donating a park home for learners with Autism, who require a specialised environment for them to effectively learn in.
Accommodating learners with Autism came at a time when even the Department didn’t know much about Autism and how to cater for Autistic learners. Educators also had to receive specialised training to help them deal with educating Autistic learners, in a very structure manner and environment. We are truly grateful for this partnership with you”, concluded Ms Nkosi.
Acknowledging receipt of the park homes, an elated Mrs D.J. Nkosi, Bumbisizwe School Principal said, “On behalf of all affiliated with Bumbisizwe Special School, I receive these classrooms with great excitement. These classrooms have enabled us to facilitate, implement and realise our motto “Education to Qualification”. We wish to convey our sincere appreciation and gratitude to LANXESS for opening their hearts and funding kit in order to help us confront the enrolment challenges we were faced with due to limited class resources. We are now able to implement White paper 6 (Inclusive Education) and can now accommodate learners with Autism and hearing impairments, a need we could not cater for, until you came to our rescue.
Learners are now able to receive an education in close proximity to their homes. You assisted with a structure for learning. These classrooms also gave the Bumbisizwe educators the opportunity to implement their acquired skills in South African Sign language (SASL), the Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and handling learners with Autism. These skills, collectively, contribute to the holistic development of our school, hence the demand”, concluded Mrs Nkosi.
