LANXESS (PTY) Ltd. joins the world in commemorating Mandela Day
The beneficiaries of Ratang Bana orphanage, in Alexandra, will remember this year’s Mandela Day for a long while.
Johannesburg – In honour of Mandela Day, celebrated globally on 18 July every year, specialty chemicals company LANXESS took part in the Mandela Day celebrations through a large team of volunteers, from their South African headquarters in Greenstone, who embody Mandela's spirit of selfless giving.
Employees from the Greenstone office’s different departments took time off from their busy schedules to invest their time at Ratang Bana, a non-profit organisation that aims support and empower vulnerable children with a focus placed on orphaned children and children affected and infected by HIV and AIDS. The centre also gives the community of Alexandra a chance to upward mobility by providing food in a form of food parcels to needy families and children.
Transported to the centre, LANXESS employees spent their 67 minutes with the children and shared the prepared lunch they brought with them, while others took care of some of the chores that care givers get to run with on a daily basis.
“As a company, we draw numerous benefits from the communities in which we operate – well-trained employees, satisfied customers and well cared for communities. We believe that by investing to empower our surrounding communities, we not only play a meaningful role, but we also do the right thing that is in line with the company’s concept of corporate citizenship. We assume responsibility and ensure that our surrounding communities also benefits from our success”, said Ben Marais, Managing Director, LANXESS South Africa.
Situated at 71 Martin Manzi Street, in Alexandra township, one of the areas in Gauteng affected by issues such as high population density, poor infrastructure and a high unemployment rate.
Overwhelmed by emotions and excitement, Bongane Radebe, Chairman at Ratang Bana Orphanage said, “I am very grateful for this day. It always gives me pleasure when organisations such as LANXESS are willing to invest in places such as these; for neglecting our young and elders is an indication morally decaying society. Taking care of them is a foundation of a healthy and strengthened society”.
