LANXESS CISA (Pty) Ltd invests in a special needs school in Newcastle

LANXESS CISA (Pty) Ltd. invested towards the procurement, installation and handover of a specially designed park home to be used as a classroom  for leaners with Autism at  Bumbisizwe School for the physically challenged, deaf and learners with Autism in Madadeni Township, Newscastle. The park home is one of the four park homes handed over by LANXESS to the school over the last three years.

The school caters for 163 learners with physical and learning disabilities. 43 deaf children joined the school in the beginning of 2015, from a neighbouring school for the deaf and blind. Hundred learners are full time boarders due to various societal challenges & parental decision.

Most of the learners come from disadvantaged families, others are orphans raised by grandparents who are dependent on government social grants to maintain their families. Learning starts from foundation phase to Grade 7 for both day scholars and boarders. The school consists of 16 classes with 10 children per class. Some classes are overcrowded by up to 23 children per class.

On behalf of the Department of Education, Ms Buhle Nkosi, Deputy Chief Education Specialist, Specialised Education said, “Thank you LANXESS for giving this school and the community of Madadeni the freedom to education. The kind of support you’ve shown to Bumbisizwe is too great to mention. As the Department of Education, we were deeply touched when your support extended to donating a park home for learners with Autism, who require a specialised environment for them to effectively learn in.

LANXESS CISA (Pty) Ltd. contributes towards the education of a 100 learners

LANXESS CICA (Pty) Ltd. responded to the call by the Amajuba District Municipality, Newcastle, to provide support to the department of Education in its pursuit to enhance education. The chemical speciality company whose operation is in Newscastle presented a cheque of R300 000 as a contribution towards a 100 needy learners' tertiary education. The money will be paid directly into the institutions' accounts where the learners have been accepted to study.

Also part of this initiative is ArcelorMittal, Checkers and others whose contributions range from financial assistance towards the registration fees of the needy and deserving learners and laptops for the best performers.
The Mayor of Amajuba District Municipality, Cllr Dr Musa Ngubane, re-assured all stakeholders of government’s commitment to support education. “As government, we will continue to ensure that every child in our schools has meaningful opportunities for learning. Our aim is to improve the reading, writing and numeracy skills of children in our education system. This must begin at primary school and be a focus at all levels of the system”, he said.

LANXESS (Pty) Ltd. invests in education by ensuring a child is fed in Alexandra Township

LANXESS recently delivered on its promise of a mobile kitchen to the Ratang Bana centre, a non-profit organisation in Alexandra Township, whose main focus is to support and empower its beneficiaries. The centre’s beneficiaries include vulnerable children from child-headed households, those affected and infected by HIV and AIDS, and the elderly who help look after orphaned children.

The Ratang Bana Centre provides a much needed services towards the well-being of the Alexander community, including the feeding programme that benefits around 468 orphaned and vulnerable school going children with meals consistently, contributing to the children’s regular and punctual school attendance. It also enables them to attend school on full stomachs. The specially designed mobile kitchen will be used for the preparation and providing of meals for the Ratang Bana Centre beneficiaries, especially the children.

“With this mobile kitchen, Ratang Bana will make a real difference to the lives of the 271 families from the Alexandra community”, said Ingrid Maredi, Founder and Centre Manager at Ratang Bana.

Apart from providing nutritious meals to hungry children, the Centre offers counselling sessions and computer literacy support to school children. The mobile kitchen investment follows that of supplying the Ratang Bana computer learning centre with equipment and software in 2016. The equipped computer centre has afforded Ratang Bana an opportunity to support learners on a daily basis as well as on weekends, helping them with basic computer skills programme and research with their schoolwork.

LANXESS (Pty) Ltd.’s first encounter with the centre was on Mandela Day 2015, when the LANXESS Greenstone team spent time with the children and grandmothers at Ratang Bana. The relationship between LANXESS and Ratang Bana strengthened and, getting to grips with the challenges it was facing committed to help.

“As a company, we realise that we do not operate in isolation to the communities around us. We instead draw numerous benefits from them. It is for this reason that we cannot turn a blind eye to their plights. LANXESS saw the need to invest in the procurement of a mobile kitchen that will see Rata Bana’s feeding scheme operating more efficiently,” said Ben Marais, LANXESS South Africa Country Representative and Managing Director.
