LANXESS Chrome Mining joins the world in commemorating Mandela Day

Rustenburg – In honour of Mandela Day, celebrated globally on 18 July every year, specialty chemicals company LANXESS took part in the Mandela Day celebrations through a large team of volunteers, from their Rustenburg chrome mine, who embody Mandela's spirit of selfless giving.

Employees from the mine’s different departments  took time off from their busy schedules to invest their time at the Grace Help Centre, a non-profit organisation that aims to provide a place of safety for children in crisis.

Over and above the much needed baby products, clothes and educational toys, the mine dispatched employees with skills in plumbing and electricity to do general maintenance at the centre. A washing machine was also donated to make laundry an easy task going forward.

“As a company, we draw numerous benefits from the communities in which we operate – well-trained employees, satisfied customers and well cared for communities. We believe that by investing to empower our surrounding communities, we not only play a meaningful role, but we  also do the right thing that is in line with the company’s concept of corporate citizenship. We assume responsibility and ensure that our surrounding communities also benefits from our success”, said Nomalanga Ledwaba, Manager: Corporate Social Responsibility at LANXESS South Africa.

Founded 17 years ago by Rina Van der Berg, Grace Help Centre provides refuge to abused and abandoned children, from all walks of life and races. The centre also offers counselling to those confronted with challenges of abuse, human trafficking, domestic violence, unwanted pregnancies as well as post abortion syndrome and trauma. The Grace Help Centre currently accommodates approximately 30 children between the ages of 0 and 13 years, who are orphaned, neglected and abandoned in the Rustenburg area.

Overwhelmed by emotions and excitement, Jessica Engelbrecht, Centre Manager at Grace Help Centre said, “I am very grateful and humbled by LANXESS mine’s gesture. As a centre staff, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude, joy and appreciation for the awesome difference LANXESS made in our lives, donating so kindly on Nelson Mandela Day 2015”.
