LANXESS continues to invest schools in the community of Madadeni

No longer will a computer room be used to accommodate the Grade 7 class at Hlabana Primary School. This is after specialty chemicals company, LANXESS, today handed over a fully equipped Grade 7 classroom. An investment worth over R100 000.

LANXESS, situated in the Newcastle Chemical Park, strongly believes that education is key to South Africa’s economic development, hence the company’s commitment to education is considered a keystone of its sustainable corporate policy.

“Hlabana Primary School caught our attention during a needs analysis done at schools around the Madadeni area. The school had an incomplete classroom whose construction was started by the School Governing Body, but could not be completed due to a lack of funds. Apart from the school meeting the company’s Corporate Responsibility criteria, to LANXESS this demonstrated effort and commitment to growth, by the school administration,” said LANXESS CISA (Pty) Ltd. Managing Director, Mr Gerhardus Strydom.

Corporate Responsibility is an integral part of LANXESS’s strategy. Through it, the company aims to bring in line economic, ecological and social considerations, while implementing targeted initiatives, including those directly and indirectly contributing to education. It is for this reason that LANXESS saw the need to invest toward the procurement and construction of the classroom, with the hope that it will serve to mitigate the problem of overcrowded classrooms in the school.

Work started on the classroom in June of this year and it was completed in September. Apart from completing the building structure, LANXESS also furnished the classroom with electricity connection, desks and chairs for both learners and teacher, a cupboard and a chalkboard.

“LANXESS understands that it does not operate in isolation to its surrounding communities. Our Corporate Responsibility is one way of ensuring that LANXESS’ contribution to this country and the community of Madadeni improves and sustains the quality of life of the people in the communities in which we operate. As a company, we care about investments of this nature, as they will continue to benefit the school longer after we are all gone”, said Strydom during his address.

Acknowledging receipt of the classroom, an elated Mrs J. Vilakazi, Principal at Hlabana Primary School said, “On behalf of all affiliated with the school, I receive this classroom with great excitement. The additional classroom will enabled us to facilitate, implement and realise our motto “Imfundo Ukukhanya”. We wish to convey our sincere appreciation and gratitude to LANXESS for opening your hearts and purse in order to help us confront the enrolment challenges we were faced with due to limited class resources.”

Hlabana Primary School was built in 1970 and has seen remarkable growth, with an inclusion of grades, classrooms and an administration block, over the years. Today the school accommodates 870 learners between Grade R to 7, 23 educators and 20 classrooms.

Expressing his gratitude on behalf of the Department of Education, Mr B.S.E Vilakazi, Circuit Manager for Madadeni Circuit, in Newcastle Circuit Management Centre, in Amajuba District said, “Thank you LANXESS for giving this school and the community of Madadeni the freedom to education. The kind of support you have shown to Hlabana Primary School and you continue to show to the surrounding schools is too great to mention. As the Department of Education, we were deeply touched when your support extended beyond just donating this classroom, but making sure that it is teacher-child ready”.
