LANXESS Merebank makes its contribution towards the Mandela Day commemoration

Merebank – In honour of Mandela Day, celebrated globally on 18 July every year, specialty chemicals company LANXESS took part in the Mandela Day celebrations through a team of volunteers, from their Merebank plant, who embody Mandela's spirit of selfless giving.

Employees from the plants’s different departments  took time off from their busy schedules to invest their time at the uMlazi Place of Safety, a non-profit organisation that aims to provide a place of safety for children in crisis.

Over and above the much needed donation of blankets, lunch packs were provided to the 68 children at the place of safety and employees volunteered to assist with the feeding of babies as well as taking care of other chores that care givers get to run with on a day-to-day basis.

“As a company, we draw numerous benefits from the communities in which we operate – well-trained employees, satisfied customers and well cared for communities. We believe that by investing to empower our surrounding communities, we not only play a meaningful role, but we  also do the right thing that is in line with the company’s concept of corporate citizenship. We assume responsibility and ensure that our surrounding communities also benefits from our success”, said Nomalanga Ledwaba, Manager: Corporate Social Responsibility at LANXESS South Africa.

Situated at 57 Mangosuthu Highway, the UMlazi place of safety provides a residential facility caring for children and youth. It also provides support for orphans as well as other vulnerable children, ensuring that they have shelter, clothing and food to eat and that their basic needs are met, including assisting them with their homework. The centre,  opened for 24 Hours and 7 days a week, takes care for boys from birth to 5 years of age and girls from birth to 17 years of age, who can stay for a maximum period of 6 months before a place of safety is found for them.

Overwhelmed by emotions and excitement, Bernie Vezasie, Childcare worker at uMlazi Place of Safety said, “I am very grateful and humbled by LANXESS’ support. As the centre staff, we would like to express our heart-felt gratitude, joy and appreciation for the overwhelming difference your organisation has made in our lives by donating so kindly on this Nelson Mandela Day. I hope this is the beginning of a mutually beneficial and ongoing relationship between us”.
